From the moment the countdown started in the New Hall auditorium during the Tiverton Junior Operatic Club’s production of “Popstars, The 90s Musical”, the audiences were 100% into this spectacular lively, colourful show.
Two years ago, almost to the day, was the last time the Juniors appeared on stage with their show, Happy Days, before the lockdown restrictions came into force and the rest is history.
Back in September 2021, we were allowed to start rehearsals for our 2022 show, “Popstars, The 90s Musical”. We had to choose a show that would make the audiences enjoy a good night out, and what a choice it was!
The cast of 24 members aged between 11 and 21 rehearsed weekly with their masks on. Not an easy task when you are trying to sing and dance, but they rose to the occasion and blasted out each song last week.
The show is set in a school where Mark (Ollie Butt) is head over heels in love with his girlfriend, Queen Bee, Shannon Van de Witt. (Charlotte Mar-yan-Lewis).
When Shannon finds out that pop-band impresario Simon Austen (James Mogford) (a Simon Cowell lookalike!) is the surprise judge at the State Talent Show, she dumps Mark for her chance at showbiz stardom.
Mark rapidly goes from High School hero to High School zero. His garage band buddies, Vinnie, Patrick and Shane (Harry Ewings, Woody Fonnereau and Kyle Southcott) rally around him and soon a plan for revenge is hatched to change their grunge band into a boy-band and snatch the talent show title from Shannon and her group “The Candy Girls” - Steffi (Katie Haw-kins), Tina (Liz Brameld), Charlie (Evie Moore). The only small problem is that the boys can’t dance!!!!
Mark enlists the help of the new girl, Ella (Emmie Clark) to help with the boy band make over and sparks soon fly!
The club are indebted to the Production Team - Kev Behan (Director), Dan Kilshaw (Chorus Master), Abbie Weston (Choreographer) and Paul Moulton (Musical Director) for giving the members a fantastic show.
