The father of a deaf girl is taking the plunge every day for a year to raise money for charity which supports deaf children and their families.

Wayne Kenny, 47, is taking on the 365 Sea Swim Challenge starting in Shoalstone Pool in Brixham.

Wayne, whose 19-year-old daughter Megan is deaf, is raising money for Totnes-based Cued Speech UK.

He has pledged to swim every day in the seas around Brixham and Dartmouth.

His efforts follow in the footsteps of Chris Thomas and Rob Hunt who have raised £5,594 on their own 365 Sea Swim Challenge.

They smashed their target of £5,000 which has been raised in aid of two local charities.

Half goes to Shoalstone Pool, the popular Art Deco seawater pool and half to The Seal Project which was formed a year ago to monitor and protect Torbay’s growing seal population.

Wayne, from Loddiswell, is starting his challenge as Rob and Chris completed theirs.

And he won’t be wearing a wetsuit, even in the winter.

Tobin Broadbent, from Cued Speech UK, said:“ We are incredibly proud to be Wayne’s chosen charity and we will be following his progress throughout the year.

“We’re looking forward to the 365 individual and incredible swim stories he’ll be telling.

“As a charity that supports families with deaf children, the Kenny family is dear to us.

“Wayne’s daughter is deaf, and he and his wife Kathy have used Cued Speech successfully to support their family’s communication.

“Kathy is now our charity’s Lead Advisor for families like her own.

“I’m sure everyone will want to donate directly to Wayne, to give him the incentive he needs to take his daily plunge.”

Cude Speech offers family support and training to help deaf people see what is being said.

It is a manual system of eight handshapes in four positions near the mouth which clarify the lip-patterns of speech and it is quick and comparatively easy to learn.

It turns spoken language into a visual language.

To donate, a Go Fund Me page has been set up at Wayne Kenny - Cued Speech UK - 365 Sea Swim Challenge.
