12 organisations came together at one of the most challenging times in the Bay’s history to provide 130,000 meals
130,000 and still going strong. That’s the staggering number of meals provided to vulnerable and needy people in Torbay during the pandemic – the equivalent of a meal for every resident in the resort.
The Torbay Food Alliance has gone from strength to strength over the last three months after 12 community organisations decided to work together to ensure those in need of food had access to support.
Working as an Alliance has enabled the organisations to develop a partnership with Fare Share South West, a national charity to secure a steady supply of food which has helped them to meet increasing demand. Volunteers have collected over 30 tonnes of food from FareShare’s Bristol hub in the last few weeks.
The organisations have worked alongside Torbay Council and NHS services like never before.
A spokesman said “Over the last few months we’ve certainly seen that extraordinary things can happen when a community comes together.
“We’re grateful to be part of such a resourceful and caring community, and we really hope that we can hold on to all the good that has come out of this crisis, long after it’s over.”
The spokesman added: “None of this would have been possible without the unrelenting hard work of the staff and volunteers.”
The Alliance has also said a special thank you to the people of Torbay after a Crowfunder appeal raised £30,000.
The spokesman said: “There have been incredible donations of £5,000 from Lumentum, £5,000 from Torbay Council, £5,000 from Cavanna Homes and £4,000 from Sovereign Homes.”
He added: “We would also like to thank the individuals and businesses who have donated food, and the many volunteer drivers who have been doing pick-ups and deliveries.
“During these difficult times, the solidarity shown by the people of Torbay has been outstanding. The Torbay community has shown a resilience and togetherness that many didn’t know we were capable of. There is a sense that this could be just the beginning.”
