Torbay cancer survivor Gordon Fyfe is urging people in the South West to take the plunge and sign up for the Swimathon Festival 2021.

Gordon, 59, who lives in Brixham has been treated for Multiple Myeloma and will be wild swimming this autumn off Blackpool Sands near Dartmouth to raise money for Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie.

Organisers are set to celebrate a festival of swimming from September 10 to 12 with the Swimathon and Open Water Swimathon events taking place on the same weekend for the first time at pools and venues across the UK.

People can participate individually or as part of a team. If swimmers can’t make one of the organised sessions, they can sign up to MySwimathon, which takes place between September 3 and 19, and choose a time and venue that suits them.

Gordon started swimming again after his treatment ended four years ago.

It was back in 2016 when Gordon, a business coach and living in Taunton, approached his GP as he had a nasty skin rash that had spread throughout his body and wasn’t clearing up.

He said: "Thankfully my GP had studied Multiple Myeloma in detail and knew the blood tests he had back were showing an abnormal figure which was a clear sign of this type of blood cancer.

"It was a shock when I was given the news, as my mum was diagnosed with the same disease years earlier. She died in 2007 at the age of 79.

“I have had some dark days, but I feel as if the medical team at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton rebooted me and I am so grateful to my GP for the early diagnosis as this made a huge difference to my treatment and chances of remission."

Gordon and his wife Nicola were always keen swimmers and got involved with open water swimming via Age UK.

The Swimathon Festival offers a variety of distances for all ages and abilities – from 400m, up to a Triple 5k, and a new 30.9k option.
