Sunrisers celebrated the lifting of restrictions with an informal summer garden party and also welcomed a new member, swelling their membership numbers to 16.

John Gilbert, who recently moved back to Torbay, decided that the Sunrise Rotary Club was just the ticket.

He said: “What better way to enjoy fellowship and helping those less fortunate, than to join Rotary.

“Despite being a Rotarian in Ripley, Surrey, since 2005, I still felt chuffed to be accepted by such a friendly and happy club.”

Fireworks in Plymouth

Bright sparks at the Rotary Club of Tormohun are organising a coach trip to Plymouth’s British Fireworks Championships this month.

This is always a spectacular event and so tickets are already being snapped up.

However, there is still an opportunity to book a seat on one of the coaches leaving Torquay if you’re quick.

The event takes place on Thursday, August 19, and it promises to be an amazing night.

The coaches will leave from St Matthias' Church in Wellswood at 5.45pm and then pick up more passengers from The Livermead House Hotel at 6pm before heading to the drop-off point at The Barbican.

Spectators can then take up their vantage points and enjoy a picnic or buy snacks from one of the many food stalls available on the night.

It’s always advisable to take chairs, rugs and warm clothes in case its turn chilly in the evening.

Please note that the return trip can take longer than expected due to the large volume of traffic leaving at the same time. Therefore, arrival back in Torquay may be late.

Tickets cost £15 per person, £12 per child, and are available from Conroy Couch Jewellers in Torquay. Call 01803 292950 or 07787 527 149. Alternatively, you can buy tickets at Me & Mrs Jones Deli in Wellswood. Call 01803 298745.

All change at Preston

Preston Rotary Club now has a new man at the helm as past president Roger Tisdall recently handed over the reins to incoming president Mike Ford.

Roger admitted: “It has been a challenging year for Rotarians not being able to meet and raise funds in the normal way. However, we did distribute over £7,000 to local and international charities.”

New president Mike Ford said: “In the past year many people have discovered volunteering can enrich their lives and help their communities. If anyone is interested in joining us, please contact http://www.preston.rotary1175.org”

Preston Rotary Club meets every Tuesday evening at the Redcliffe Hotel in Paignton.
