A broken collarbone has ruined Harrison Wood’s hopes of a strong start to the cycle race season with his new team Feirense-Beeceler.

The Torbay pro had already been hit by a broken wheel at a key moment in the second ‘queen’ stage of Portugal’s prestigious Tour of the Algarve.

But he was still bidding for a high placing when he was caught in a crash in Saturday’s fourth of five stages.

He was due to have the collarbone repaired in an operation in Porto today (Wed) before travelling home to Torquay.

“I’m hoping to be out for no more than six weeks,” said Wood.

“But right now it feels as if I didn’t have bad luck, I’d have no luck at all.”

The Algarve race was climber Wood’s second in his new role as leader of the Feirense-Beeceler squad.

He reported: “On the second stage my wheel broke 30K out when the race was full-gas before the final climb.

“I chased back on, but I was full of lactic when I got there and then got caught behind a split in the lead group.”

He eventually finished 52nd, five minutes down on eventual overall winner Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek) from Spain.

But all his hopes of a decent placing were ended by Saturday’s accident.

The Mid-Devon CC’s first promotion of the 2026 road season, the annual Primavera Pursuit RR, will soon be upon us – it’s on the usual Hatherleigh-Halwill Junction circuit on Sunday, March 15.
