Two former Plainmoor favourites pulled on the white shirts of England to line up against a team in the yellow and blue of Torquay United to raise money for a good cause.

Around £500 was raised for the work of the Torquay United Community Sports Trust, as the two teams of over-55s lined up for the game.

The Devon County FA headquarters at Coach Road in Newton Abbot was the venue for a spirited match and a convivial get-together afterwards.

Dave Mason, who organised and played in the game, said afterwards: “It was a great occasion, and a privilege to pull on the yellow shirts for such a good cause.”

Former Torquay United player-coach Gary Nelson captained the England side, which also included ex-Gulls winger Peter Coffill.

Nelson scored eight goals in 34 games for United in 1996/97, and chronicled his experiences in his award-winning book Left Foot In The Grave. Coffill played 122 games for Torquay between 1977 and 1981, scoring 11 goals in the process.

The England side won 5-0 at Coach Road, with two goals apiece for Martin Thorpe and Alun Wood, and a single strike from David Gipp.
