Something very special is stirring at the South Devon School of Gymnastics on Yalberton Industrial Estate in Paignton, and the net result is global and national recognition.

Following on from the amazing Abi Martin competing in the Paris Olympics for Team GB and again in the squad for the World Championships, the next generation of Torbay talent is emerging on the national scene.

Willow-Mae Calland, the 12 year-old student from Torquay Academy, has been recognised for her immense dedication and natural ability with selection for the England Gymnastics squad to compete in the Caledonia Cup in November.

The Caledonia Cup is a home internationals series feature the top gymnasts from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland, and Willow-Mae will be one of the youngest competitors involved.

Earlier this year, Willow-Mae took her place at the British Championships, showcasing superb potential with mature performances on the floor, bars, vault and beam, despite being in the company of Olympic medalists Jake Jarman, Harry Hepworth and Jessica Gadirova.

While these experiences on the international stage are a fantastic reward for Willow-Mae, it is the hard work behind the scenes that is the true testament to her determination, as well as the ongoing support from everyone at the South Devon School of Gymnastics.

Rest assured, even while you read this inspiring story, Willow-Mae will be training hard, working tirelessly to improve every day. Reaching the top requires constant determination, physical prowess and mental resilience, and to do all this at such a young age is truly remarkable.
