Manager Paul Wotton paid tribute to the ‘bravery’ of Jordan Young after Torquay United’s match-winning winger had helped the Gulls to an important 3-2 win over in-form Dover Athletic at Plainmoor on Bank Holiday Monday.
Young scored his third goal in the first five games of the season – a show-stopper to level at 2-2 – as United moved back up to second place in the National League South.
It followed a below-par 2-1 defeat at newly-promoted Horsham 48 hours before, a jolt which upped the pressure to beat Dover.
“There are two types of bravery in football,” said Wotton. “You can stick your head in front of a ball and get a stud down your face, but that’s easy.
“Being brave is also, when you haven’t started the game well, you just keep getting the ball – that’s tremendous bravery and character.
“I thought Jordan was terrific. He was a threat all day.”
The loss at Horsham had felt like a real setback, especially as the Gulls, after a tame all-round display, had snatched an 89th minute equaliser through sub Ed Palmer and still conceded the winner in stoppage-time.
But after the win over Dover, in which they had to come from behind twice, Wotton insisted: “I haven’t actually done a team talk today.
“The players were in training (Sunday) after Horsham. They rallied round and got themselves going.
“I’m not pleased for me – I don’t care about me – but I’m pleased for the fans, and I’m so pleased for the players, because they showed tremendous character and desire.
“We’re second in the league. We can be better, but we’re doing alright.”
A near-3,600 crowd means that United have already been watched by 10,889 fans at Plainmoor in August this season.
The Gulls, who sustained another injury to midfielder Munashe Sundire (hamstring) on Monday, now hit the road for back-to-back away games at Hemel Hempstead Town this Saturday and Hampton & Richmond next Tuesday night.
But the stretched squad has been boosted by two new signings who both made their debuts over the weekend. Ex-trialist full-back Denzel Akyeampong, 21, has signed a short-term ‘prove yourself’ contract and Luton Town winger Josh Phillips, 20, has joined on an initial 28-day youth loan.
