Ethan Gardner with a Mirror Carp
Latest angling news from Devon
Carp continue to show at Newbarn Angling Centre in good numbers and Ethan Gardner, a previous Fish of the Month winner fished a 24 hour session and landed five Carp well into the 20lbs mark. There were three Commons and two mirrors, one of which was a really pretty fish, all were landed on a Five Star baits Pina colada pop up, which can be purchased on site.
Bailiffs Rob and Steve have been busy, not only erecting huts on the specimen lake, but also repairing and putting together new fishing platforms on the other pools. The top poo Lilly is now complete and Willow nearly complete.
Rob took a few hours off from his bailiff duties to fish for the first time in many months and was soon rewarded with a fine high double figure Common Carp.
Some good perch are still showing from Spring ponds at Rocombe and with them reaching over 4lbs, it is a good place to go for the price of a day ticket to target them.
Newton Abbot FA continued their winter matches with the latest Rover sweepstake being won by Gary Webber with a bag of 51lbs 15oz, pipping Ethan Gilpin by just 4oz, while third place was taken by Duncan Arnold with 26lbs 10oz. This match was fished on Island Pond.
The Saturday Bradley League Rover was won by Mike Hadley with a weight of 21lbs 8oz, followed by Sam Powell with 17lbs 9oz and Ethan Gilpin 11lbs 8oz. Ian Mill fished Island pond and landed two Pike of 12lbs and 8lbs and a surprise Eel of 3lbs 7oz.
Beach fishing continues to be hard on the south coast but for those prepared to travel, Ray can be expected from the north coast, as shown by Wayne Hand on a recent session. At another mark on a different day he also landed a good Bass which, of course, was returned.
Boat fishing seem quite reasonable, as Matt Forrester took a client out on the wrecks to try their hand at slow pitch Jigging with the best fish of the day being a 15lbs Pollack.
I fished with Honiton SAC on their monthly species hunt out of Beer and scored a credible a credible 140 points, giving me second place on the boat, on what was an uncomfortable day in a big swell. Fish landed on the day included Ballan Wrasse, Cuckoo Wrasse, Pout, Whiting, Dogfish, Thornback Rays and Smoothhounds. Lyme Bay holds many species and always seems to produce fish when elsewhere can be difficult.
There is still plenty of time to enter our fish of the month competition kindly sponsored by Sidewinder lures and Newbarn Angling Centre. Please email your photos and catch reports to johnsherlockfish@gmail.com
