South Devon sailing clubs are finding innovative ways of maintaining links with their members and the wider community during lockdown. Some of the many local heroes who are working to keep others safe and well are the clubs’ chefs. John Powell, catering partner and chef at Royal Torbay Yacht Club’s N12 restaurant in Torquay, has been running a home-delivery meal service not just for club members but the wider community with free delivery for some postcodes. Brixham Yacht Club has also received excellent feedback, from members using the food delivery service from its Galley chef, Lee Mitchell. He also supports local suppliers, farmers and fishermen. When his club went into lockdown, Salcombe Yacht Club Nick Laver-Vincent cooked up all the fresh food in stock and made over 40 meals. Club manager Jules McColl took these to the Kingsbridge Food Bank, which distributes to 22 parishes including Salcombe. He now makes almost 1,000 meals a week.
