Sisters plan 25k hike to raise awareness of mum’s devastating illness
Four sisters are to walk 25km to raise money for research into motor neurone disease after their mother was diagnosed with the incurable condition earlier this year.
Olympic gold medal weightlifter Emily Muskett and sisters nurse Louise Martin, Laura Brem-Wilson and Eleanor Eastham will be walking to raise awareness of the cruel disease which affects their 64-year-old mum Celia Godley.
The girls were due to take part in the Thames Bridges Trek organised by the Motor Neurone Disease Association charity but this has been cancelled due to the Covid outbreak.
Instead, on Saturday the sisters will be walking from their parents home in Shiphay, Torquay, to the Guardhouse cafe at Berry Head and finishing at Paignton Pier.
They have already smashed their £1,225 Just Giving target, raising £5,344.
Since being diagnosed in January, Celia’s condition has deteriorated rapidly.
She has lost the use of her arms, legs and hands and is fed through a tube as eating and swallowing are too difficult.
She is cared for at home by husband Rob.
Louise said: “This is an utterly devastating and heartbreaking disease for anyone to have to go through or witness.”
The sisters are keen to raise the profile of the disease which claims lives between one and three years after diagnosis.
There is no cure.
Emily added: “Our mum means everything to us and whilst we can’t do anything to make her better, we can do our bit towards raising the profile of MND and to raise funds to help find a cure for this devastating disease.
“For now, both mum and dad are being incredibly brave but mum is being particularly courageous, something that we all take strength from.
“We are focusing on making happy memories and living each day to the max filled with loads of love and laughter.
“Life is fragile but as long as you have love, you have everything.
“Everyone is a bit scared, but we are less scared together.”
