Laura Tobin, ITV’s Good Morning Britain’s popular meteorologist and weather presenter, launched a Torbay charity event.

She took to Facetime to start the Torbay branch of Save the Children's virtual walk to Yemen, a total of 4,593 miles.

Torbay is joining volunteers across the UK to virtually Walk the World for children and families globally and in the UK. The challenge is to virtually walk to chosen countries highlighting the work of the charity, including the UK, Syria, Cox’s Bazaar (Bangladesh) and Yemen. The money raised will help support some of the world’s most vulnerable children especially those hit even harder by the pandemic.

Laura congratulated the team for their innovative fund-raising efforts. She revealed how she had close links with Torbay having lived for a year in South Devon, studying at the local College before training at the Met office in Exeter.

Dania Shaw, Community Fundraising Manager, Save the Children South West said “Due to the pandemic the charity faces challenges with its revenue expected to fall by millions of pounds due to volunteers being unable to raise money.  That is why volunteers in the South West have come together to see what we could do ."

Fund-raisers can run, cycle, horse ride, use a mobility scooter or even roller skate. To include miles in the total they are asked to send a message to the Facebook page, Save the Children Southwest.

Su Laureston, secretary of the Torbay branch, who is also taking part in the challenge, said: “Taking part in Walk the World is a great way of appreciating the beautiful scenery on our doorstep and with every step knowing that we are all helping to make a difference to the lives of families that need our help, now more than ever.
