Babbacombe and St Marychurch Probus Club are 'home' at last.

After an 18 month period since its last meeting, the comfortable lounge room at St Matthias Church, Babbacombe Road, Wellswood, was the setting as vice-chairman Ron Franklin welcomed speaker Dr Kevin Dixon.

His presentation was “Torbay Legends” based on his interest in local history. It featured a wide range of local myths and legends including the ‘Daddyhole Plain devil’; ghosts in Chapel Woods and the various legendary tales attracted over the centuries at Torre Abbey and the Spanish Barn.

Kevin related the myth of the local haunting of the spirit of Lily Langtry at St. John’s Church in the Terrace; the Nun’s ghost at Ilsham Grange; and 'England’s most haunted house' at Castel-a-Mare which was located not too far from St Matthias.

In more recent times Kevin also recounted the supposed sightings of the ‘Big Foot’ in Churston Woods and the Goodrington Sea Serpent at Saltern Cove.

Then there was the ‘Blue’ and ‘White’ Lady of Berry Pomeroy Castle; the most haunted road across Dartmoor between Princetown and Moretonhampstead and the regular change of flowers at Jenny’s grave near Widecombe. The vote of thanks was proposed by Ken Wright.
