The Paignton branch of the Royal British Legion assembled last week at the Palace Gardens memorial to commemorate Merchant Navy Day.

While adhering to social distancing guidelines, president Major Ron Goodwin, chairman Ged Sarsfield and members of Paignton RBL marked the occasion with the Paignton RBL Standard on display for the first time since March, accompanied by the Torbay Merchant Navy Standard.

Since 2000, Merchant Navy Day has honoured the men and women who kept our ‘island nation’ afloat during both world wars. It is believed more than 26,000 Merchant Navy personnel lost their lives in the Second World War.

Major Goodwin read the poem ‘Heroes’ by David Partridge in honour of the Merchant Navy, while Mr Sarsfield read the remembrance address.

Wreaths were laid on behalf of the Merchant Navy and the Paignton RBL.
