Devon is set to benefit from Aldi’s nationwide £1.6 billion expansion plan, with the supermarket chain confirming it will invest around £29 million in the county over the next two years.

The retailer this week announced plans to open 80 new stores across the UK in 2026 and 2027, as well as upgrading existing branches and developing new distribution centres.

Although exact locations are yet to be confirmed, Aldi said it is continuing to seek sites in Torquay, Exeter and Plymouth for new stores.

The chain, which now has more than 1,060 UK branches, says its growth will create thousands of jobs while supporting British suppliers. Aldi already has two stores in Torbay: one on Torquay Road, Torquay and another on Brixham Road, Paignton.

Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer for Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “Shoppers are still finding things difficult and that’s why we’re staying laser-focused on doing what Aldi does best – offering customers great quality products at unbeatable prices. Nobody else is making the same commitment to everyday low prices – no clubs, no gimmicks, no tricks – just prices our customers can trust and quality they can depend on.”

Aldi has set a long-term target of 1,500 stores nationwide. Its latest figures show sales rose to £18.1bn in 2024, with market share climbing to 10.8% in 2025 — making it the UK’s third largest supermarket by food and drink sales.
