There were celebrations in Westminster today (11 September) after Jennie, the six-year-old guide dog of Torbay MP Steve Darling, was crowned Westminster Dog of the Year 2025.
The annual competition, organised by The Kennel Club and Dogs Trust, took place in Victoria Tower Gardens and highlights the importance of dog welfare, responsible ownership and the human-animal bond.
Jennie, a golden retriever cross Labrador, triumphed in the Sir David Amess Pawblic Vote – the public choice award named in memory of the late MP who was a staunch advocate for dog welfare.
Steve Darling, Liberal Democrat MP for Torbay, said: “I’m absolutely delighted. It just reflects the halo of positivity that Jennie brings to the world. When she is out and about with me she’s always keen to engage with people, and people have paid that back now by supporting her with this public vote.”
He added: “Jennie is more than my guide dog — she’s my companion, my bridge to others, and now, officially, Westminster’s Top Dog. Her win is a celebration of inclusion, resilience, and the vital role assistance dogs play in public life. I’m incredibly proud of her.”
Since his election in 2024, Jennie has become a familiar presence in Parliament, often seen lying by the front benches or greeting MPs across party lines.
Jannine Edgar, Chief Executive of The Kennel Club, said: “Many congratulations to Jennie and Steve Darling MP for winning the hearts of the public and achieving victory in the Sir David Amess Public Vote. The bond between the pair has been so clear to see all day.”
Claire Calder, Head of Public Affairs at Dogs Trust, said: “Huge congratulations to Jennie and Steve Darling MP for winning the Westminster Dog of the Year 2025 public vote. Securing support from dog lovers across the country is no small feat, and it’s a testament to their special bond and the affection people feel for them.”
The overall Westminster Dog of the Year title was awarded to Poykee, a Keeshond owned by Sarah Edwards, Labour MP for Tamworth. Rescue dog Mabel with Becky Gittins MP took second place, while Lucy the Labrador, owned by Andrew Snowden MP, came third.
