'Grand' plans are being drawn up for one of Torbay's most well-known and oldest inns and hotels after it was sold in a deal worth around £1,250,000.

The sale of the Churston Court is being seen as a massive vote of confidence in the area and the Bay generally.

It has been bought by Jamie Phillips. He and wife Sarah are the well-known owners of the Kingston Estate at Staverton near Totnes which they have transformed into an award-winning event and wedding venue.

Agents Charles Darrow, in conjunction with independent hotel broker Simon Stevens Associates, negotiated the confidential sale.

The property, a 16th-century inn and hotel in the village of Churston Ferrers near Brixham, sees new freehold owners for the first time in almost 10 years, where the property sold off a guide price of £1,250,000.

Charles Darrow say the the Grade II Listed property is now set to benefit significant investment, with extensive plans being prepared by the new owners with details unveiled later this year.

An interior with original features dating back, in part, to the mid-1500s, Churston Court is a characterful, two-storey property Saxon manor set in 1.4 acres of surrounding grounds.

While retaining many original features, the property was well known for its character trading areas, including its 18 letting bedrooms. A two-bedroom owner’s accommodation with private access is also included.

The Churston Court was introduced to select, well-funded buyers. The business had been operated under tenancy by its experienced previous operator.

Jon Clyne, director at Charles Darrow, said: “We were instructed to run a confidential marketing campaign by our client and approached a number of buyers for which we received competitive market interest. The purchaser’s have a plethora of hospitality experience, and have grand plans to significantly invest in the property before a grand re-opening in 2023 for which we wish them every success and look forward to seeing their plans come to fruition. We are all acutely aware of the challenges that currently exist in the hospitality industry, but iconic sites like The Churston Court are not readily available, so continue to achieve strong buyer demand."

The Kingston Estate is award-winning. The stunning Georgian house and gardens have a colourful history dating back to 1735.

The estate, which has been featured in Vogue magazine, includes a clutch of luxury cottages, stunning gardens, an underground bar and leisure facilities.
