Manager Gary Johnson is due to announce Torquay United's retained list before the weekend in the wake of the Gulls' National League play-off final defeat.

This will be the shortest close-season on record - the 2021-2022 NL season kicks off on August 21 - and Johnson held a 'strategy' meeting with managing director George Edwards on Tuesday before continuing contract talks with his players.

Johnson said: "We've got plenty of business to do, not just with the lads here but freshening up the squad."

His brother Peter, head of recruitment, and assistant Aaron Downes have been working on prospective new signings for some time, although negotiations were on hold until Sunday's penalty shoot-out against Hartlepool United.

Most of the senior squad are free agents but United paid a fee for Player Of The Year Connor Lemonheigh-Evans (Bristol City) in August and signed ex-loanee Joe Lewis (Swansea City) in January, so they are two players thought to be under contract.
