Deputy mayor Cllr Hazel Foster and the decorated shelter
A popular shelter for coastal walkers in Torquay is getting a much-needed facelift.
The shelter on Walls Hill at Babbacombe will get vital repairs to its roof and a damaged concrete lintel after funding was agreed by Torbay Council following work by local councillors and the Wellswood Community Partnership.
The shelter was also recently repainted with wildlife scenes by a volunteer local artist, with money for the paint used coming from the community ward funds of Wellswood and St Marychurch councillors as it is very close to the border of both wards. Now a key part of the shelter’s structure will be repaired, after £6,756 of community infrastructure levy funding was agreed by the local authority.
This followed work by Wellswood Community Partnership and Wellswood councillors Nick Bye and Hazel Foster to secure it.
The levy funds local infrastructure by charging developers on new builds in Torbay. The repairs to the structure will not affect the new murals.
Cllr Foster said: “The new wildlife scenes have lifted the shelter and been popular with residents and visitors alike. Now necessary repair work will be completed to the roof ensuring this shelter can be enjoyed by all for years to come.”
