Torbay woman starts new dog social group

There’s a new Small Dog Enthusiast Group in town.

Local resident Kris Richards has organised a new dog social group, which hosts weekly drop-in sessions every Wednesday from 10.30am to 12.30pm at the Babbacombe Inn in Torquay.

Kris launched the group in June 2023 with the support of community builders Jennie Langridge and Marian Parker, along with voluntary interest group organiser Torquay u3a.

Kris and her chihuahua, Flag, missed out on crucial socialisation due to Kris having to avoid crowds while undergoing cancer treatment. Just as her treatment ended, the country plunged into lockdown. When restrictions were lifted, Flag became overwhelmed by the sudden influx of people and dogs.

Determined to help Flag adjust, Kris teamed up with two dog behaviourists to gradually introduce him to social situations. Through this process, she realised she hardly knew any other dog owners or enthusiasts, which inspired her to start these informal gatherings.

Kris said: “I absolutely love this group, and I’m so pleased with how it has grown. We have such a lovely mix of people and dogs, and Flag has improved so much. Those who knew him before often comment on how far he’s come—he's now a well-loved member of the local community.

“There’s no pressure or commitment to attend—life can be unpredictable! Just come along whenever you can or want to, with no explanation needed if you can’t make it. We’re a friendly, inclusive group, supportive of each other, and our goal is to make every meeting a relaxed and enjoyable experience. People can share as much or as little as they like."

You don’t need to own a dog to join the group. For nervous dogs, it’s a great opportunity to socialise, while owners can chat, enjoy a coffee, and even join a short walk afterward.
