Paignton will take on an Australian Outback feel this spring as Paignton Zoo welcomes two bouncing new residents.

Stripes and Pretty Boy are marking the return of one of the zoo's most popular attractions—the Wallaby Walkthrough Experience.

The two young red-necked wallabies will be joining the zoo's existing group of marsupials, bringing the total number to 10. This diverse group includes both red-necked and swamp wallabies, giving visitors a unique opportunity to see two species in one immersive setting.

Sam Gray, Team Leader of Mammals at Paignton Zoo, said: "Having both species in our care allows us to showcase the diversity within wallabies and help our visitors understand more about these fascinating marsupials. We are told Stripe and Pretty Boy have wonderful personalities – they're curious, confident, and will be great additions to our wallaby mob.”

Visitors to the walkthrough can observe the differences between the two species. Swamp wallabies have a distinct hopping style, while red-necked wallabies are generally larger.

The walkthrough, which has been closed since early 2020, is due to reopen in time for February half term, will offer visitors a more immersive experience with these charismatic marsupials.

The new arrivals come from Combe Martin Wildlife Park, which recently faced challenges during Storm Darragh when fallen trees damaged several enclosures. This collaboration between the two wildlife parks demonstrates the strong partnership within the zoo community, ensuring the best possible outcomes for animal welfare.

Louisa Johnson, Head Keeper at Combe Martin Wildlife Park, added: "We were looking for a collection to take on these two males, who are offspring from our female group. We're pleased they've found such a wonderful new home at Paignton Zoo where they'll be part of an exciting visitor experience."

The walkthrough will only operate on selected days, enhanced by the presence of knowledgeable volunteer guides who will share fascinating insights about these remarkable marsupials. This guided experience ensures both visitor enjoyment and animal welfare. Visitors are asked to stay on marked paths and refrain from feeding or touching the animals.

Sam Gray continued: “Our dedicated volunteers play a crucial role in making this experience special, helping visitors learn more about these remarkable animals while ensuring their wellbeing. They are a tremendous asset to the zoo!"

Visitors can purchase tickets to Paignton Zoo online to guarantee entry and save 10 per cent compared to walk-up prices. The Wallaby Walkthrough Experience is included in standard admission.
