Music to accompany the Paignton Christmas lights switch on
Christmas has arrived in Paignton.
It came with the inaugural turning-on of the Paignton Town Community Christmas tree lights. The Tree, part of the Torbay Bay of Lights trail, is an eight-metre-high digital pixel Christmas tree situated on the Geoplay Park on the Paignton beachfront.
The event on Saturday night began with a brief address by the chair of the Partnership, Alan Whytock, where he welcomed all the excited folk who had gathered around the tree.
The lighting of the tree was followed by a few carols led by members of the Paignton Community Choir and a small local music ensemble.
Alan thanked the Paignton Community Singers, led by Jo Reynolds, and the four fabulous musicians who gathered at the base of the tree.
The instruments included two guitars, a trumpet, a flute, and an accordion.
Trish Whytock, of the Paignton Town Community Partnership Steering Group, said: “The comments that were given and also overheard were heartwarming and fabulous.
“Everybody seemed to love the event. This was definitely a win, and the partnership said that they would definitely enjoy repeating the event next year.
“The event attracted a gathering of all ages. The outside tables of the Costero Lounge were filled with older participants and some families, while Simon De Vey from The Geopark Café said he had stayed open to serve mulled drinks and hot chocolate and had also had good trade that evening.
“This gathering was reminiscent of a good old-fashioned Christmas feel.”
