Lorna Milnes, Torquay Rotary President, presented the prizes to the talented and delighted winners
Torquay Rotary has been very proud to organise Torquay schools’ 2024 Environmental Poster Competition based on the topic of ‘Energy Saving’.
The pupils taking part in the competition were tasked to create a poster that would raise awareness of the importance of ‘Energy Saving’ and its environmental impact on all our lives in addition to suggesting ideas on ways to achieve it.
The competition was open to all Torbay Schools’ years 7, 8, and 9 resulting in five Torquay schools competing.
These included Torquay Boys' Grammar, Combe Pafford, St Cuthbert Maine, the Spires and Torquay Academy.
Overall, there were 204 excellent entries which proved quite challenging for the judges who were: Dr Tom Milnes of the Plymouth University of Art; Kevin Needham, Rotary Environmental Officer; and Andrew Bissell who was the Rotary Club sponsor.
The Livermead House Hotel hosted a well-attended prize giving ceremony at which the highest rated entry in each year group collected a prize of £100 with their school also receiving £100. There was also a prize for Special Mention participants.
All participants, as well as the schools, received a certificate of participation. The prize money was generously provided by the competition sponsor, Sunamp which is a world leading company providing thermal energy storage technologies.
As the poster standards were so high it took considerable discussion for the judges to choose the final winners and Special Mention participant who were:
Year 7: Rapheal Bhatia of Torquay Boys Grammar School with a Special Mention for Alphie Williams of Torquay Academy.
Year 8: Sophia Smith of St Cuthbert Maine with a Special Mention for Jessie Cavanagh also of St Cuthbert Maine.
Year 9: Connie Kinghon of Torquay Academy with a Special Mention for Flo Sandford also of Torquay Academy.
