Torbay Remembers with special services and parades

Dignitaries, military, community, police and veterans unite for Remembrance Weekend

A newly-refurbished Torquay war memorial took pride of place as Torbay 'Remembered'.

Torbay has 'Remembered'.

Remembrance services and ceremonies were being held across the resort on Sunday November 10 and Armistice Day, Monday November 11.

Torquay cenotaph in Princess Gardens on the seafront was given a much-needed makeover in time for the special weekend. The work was funded by the Big Wheel Fund, a donation made by the Mellors Group, the owners and operators of the English Riviera Wheel.

Torbay's communities unite on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day to remember the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community of the UK and Commonwealth.

To complement National Remembrance Services, Remembrance Services, Civic Parades and quiet moments of reflection take place locally in Torquay, Paignton and Brixham.

In Torquay a Remembrance Sunday Civic Parade and Service was held with a parade by the Torbay Armed Service units, Veterans, Royal British Legion, scout groups and Cadets That was followed by the traditional two minutes’ silence at 11am, a short service and the laying of wreaths. 

Bay Brass performed as well as the Exeter Pipe and Drums. Torbay mayor Hannah Stevens attended along with other civic dignitaries.

In Paignton a  Remembrance Church Service was held at Paignton Parish Church by Father Neil Knox, with the Paignton branch of the Royal British Legion. In the afternoon a Laying of the Wreath Service was held in Palace Avenue Gardens.

In Brixham a service of remembrance, arranged by the Brixham branch of the Royal British Legion, took place at the War Memorial at Berry Head Road with a wreath laying ceremony. A Brixham Remembrance Parade was also held.
