Members of the Paignton Branch of the Royal British Legion, along with The Merchant Navy and Royal British Legion Newton Abbot Standards gathered to remember the Merchant Navy at the war memorial in Paignton.
The Merchant Navy can trace its origins back as far as the 17th century. In both world wars the fleet suffered heavy losses and in WW2 Britain lost almost 12 million tons of shipping and 32,000 Merchant Seamen.
In 2000 Merchant Navy Day became an official day of Remembrance.
*The Merchant Navy Association meets in the Paignton Conservative Club on the third Friday of the month at 1pm. All ex-Merchant Navy can be sure of a very friendly welcome.
