Friends and family gathered to wish a very special many happy returns to a Torquay woman celebrating her 100th birthday.

Peggy Fletcher, a member of Wellswood WI, celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday, June 13.

At midday, her son Paul, nephew John and his family, her great nephew Simon and many of her friends including her WI friends, met outside her flats to sing her 'happy birthday'.

WI president Sue read the poem she had composed for the occasion and members of the WI choir, led by Viv, sang The Devon Hymn, to the music of Morning Has Broken.

Peggy's nephew John proposed a toast and everyone sang For She's A Jolly Good Fellow.

The sun shone and Peggy was thrilled with her lockdown celebration.

A birthday cake was made and given to her by her carers from Maids to Care.

Peggy Fletcher was born on June 13, 1920, in Exeter and it was there that she grew up. Her grandfather rang the bells in Exeter Cathedral.

With war imminent, Peggy's father joined the Royal Navy as an officer on HMS Devonshire and the family moved to Torquay.

Peggy was married at St Mark's Church, Torquay, (now Toads Theatre) and worked in the Torquay Post Office until her first son Grahame was born in 1944.

Grahame has retired to Florida, after a successful business career in America. Second son Paul retired to Plymouth after a career in the army.

Peggy has three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

After the death of her husband, she remarried and moved to Exmouth where she joined the Women's Institute.

On retiring to Torquay, she quickly became involved in the newly formed Wellswood WI, helping to run the lunch club and the walks, for many years.

WI president Sue said: 'Peggy is still an active and lively member of Wellswood WI and we are very proud of her. Congratulations Peggy!
