The partnership was formed just before lockdown and includes a wide range of community organisations wanting to provide a locally coordinated, supportive response to the Covid-19 crisis for more vulnerable individuals and groups.

Though people see Brixham Theatre primarily as an entertainment venue - currently closed because of the virus - BTCIO is so much more than that.

While providing a quality and varied menu of artistic performances for public entertainment, BTCIO's charitable objectives also include activities with local community groups, schools, support for vulnerable or marginalised groups, and actions to increase access to the arts generally.

The use of the theatre by local community groups is also provided under very favourable terms and conditions.

Under more 'normal' circumstances, Brixham Theatre also supports local businesses by being very active in local festivals, which attract tourists to the town and boost the local economy.

So while the theatre, as a building, remains temporarily closed, being a member of Brixham Stronger Together has enabled the theatre to remain active in our community.

In addition, behind the closed doors of Brixham Theatre and the Brixham Town Hall complex, there has been much activity since March 2020 by BTCIO volunteers to ensure theatre refurbishment and redecoration.

Improvements have been made to the front of the theatre, carpets in the auditorium have been cleaned, areas redecorated, window dressings updated, improved technical equipment assured, internet access now covering all areas occupied by the theatre.

A new lift from ground floor to the auditorium is also being installed in August. The list goes on...

In the last financial year to lockdown, the theatre saw a doubling in the number of shows/events and audience figures from the previous year.

Though we now have a gap in our operations, our plans and bookings for 2021 are already developed.

As well as popular tribute bands, such as Fleetwood Mac Songbook or Dire Straits, the artistic offer for 2021 ranges from dramas such as 'The Man with the Golden Pen' to comedies like 'The Day the Titanic Sank' to the popular return of nationally recognised music groups such as Gigspanner, alongside performances from local groups including Shakespeare, youth group shows and a 'Little Shop of Horrors' musical. More news to come!

What people don't realise is that all activity related to Brixham Theatre is generated from purely voluntary effort! BTCIO does not have any paid staff! The enthusiasm of our members and volunteers keeps BTCIO going.

If you want to explore volunteering with us, please do so. There are so many ways you can help. Email Pauline Smith at pauline@brixhamtheatre.uk or call 07980101952 without obligation.

We are also looking for new trustees for Brixham Theatre CIO. There is a formal process to apply to be a BTCIO Trustee, available in the autumn, but we welcome an initial informal chat about the role Contact Vanessa Fitzgerald on 07568544309 - text or ring.

Our annual meeting has been postponed until Tuesday, November 3, at 7pm. This will take place both at Brixham Theatre auditorium - respecting social distancing - and via video-conferencing through Zoom . Details will be sent to all BTCIO Members in advance.

We would like to also invite new people to become members. For just £10 a year, you can support your theatre going forward.

Meanwhile, Brixham Theatre echoes the supportive message to our community from the Brixham Stronger Together partnership.

We also look forward to welcoming you back to the theatre again as soon as that is possible!
