The free newspaper’s launch edition three weeks ago was transformed into a unique, one-off publication working in collaboration with Torbay Council and other key partners, including the local health trust and police. The 16-page special was delivered directly through the letterboxes of every one of the 65,000 homes in the Bay. It was packed with messages of support and details of advice centres and helpline numbers for residents in the current Coronavirus crisis. It was aimed especially at those without access to websites or social media platforms and also carried several human interest stories of how the people and the Bay were united in the fight against the pandemic. Mrs Hernandez praised the newspaper in a video interview on her Crime Commissioner’s Facebook page. Staff member Patrick Phelvin, who was conducting the interview, passed on a question to her from a member of the public who asked how information was being sent to residents. Mrs Hernandez highlighted the Torbay Weekly and said: “Everybody got together to really help ensure the right information was being delivered to people’s homes. “This is potentially the resurrection of the print media.” The Torbay Weekly has since reverted back to its normal print run of 15,000 copies delivered weekly to selected postcodes in the Bay. An extra 5,000 are currently being added to the delivery network. They will eventually be in pick-up bins in areas not covered when lockdown restrictions are reviewed or lifted.
