Babbacombe Theatre looks forward to re-opening - but it still needs help for the future
Staff at Torquay’s Babbacombe Theatre are making preparations to reopen.
The popular venue has been closed since March.
But social media has played an important part in keeping the theatre going and given a massive boost to the management, staff and show casts during the pandemic.
There have been many positive comments from followers on Facebook, saying that the daily posts have been a lifeline and an integral part of making the lockdown tolerable.
Archived video footage taken from shows as far back as 1994 has been viewed almost 400,000 times and the number of followers has increased by more than 800.
The venue now features in the top 10 per cent of attractions worldwide, having just won the Travellers ’Choice award, based on reviews and ratings on TripAdvisor.
A theatre spokesman said: “Considerng the theatre has remained closed and only five star reviews have been posted during the lockdown is a testament to the number of five star reviews it has received in recent years.”
Although the theatre has benefitted from recent donations, the initiatives allocated by the government and a business loan, these funds will not sustain the viability of the venue into next year while closed.
Even when it reopens, the costs associated with providing a safe environment and reduced capacity, its survival into 2021/22 is still going to be down to the continued generosity of everyone who values the venue and its contribution that it makes to the local economy.
The theatre’s trust have linked with Crowdfunder.co.uk to create an umbrella campaign #saveourtheatres that will go live on Monday September 7.
The box office will reopen on October 27.
There will be new guidelines in place for not only the venues cast and staff, but for patrons too.
Most significantly because of reduced audience numbers to be COVID, it is anticipated that the shows, most especially those on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day will sell out quickly.
