Princess Theatre stage manager Martyn Jenkins was able to bid a fond and personal farewell to a skipper of one of the cruise ships off Torbay.

Martyn was asked to use his expertise as stage and technical manager to check over the theatre and stage of the Eurodam, one of the Bay's longest-staying 'neighbours'  since the pandemic began.

He went on board last Thursday to complete the inspection of the Mainstage Theatre that holds 890 people before the Eurodam departed.

That is where he came across the ‘very likeable’ Captain Arno Jutten. Captain Jutten left the ship shortly before she set sail for IJmuiden in the Netherlands - giving Martyn a ‘lift’  back to shore. Martyn says: “I was lucky enough to be driven in the tender back from the Eurodam to Haldon Pier by Captain Jutten. It is extremely rare for a cruise ship captain to drive a tender. He told me that he had thoroughly enjoyed his interaction with the people of Torbay during his stay.”

He added: "On the tender coming back into Torquay Harbour I was sat next to the Cruise Director of the Eurodam who had been out on her for the day. She said to me as we entered the harbour bathed in the evening sun ‘I have been all around the world, why have I not been to Torquay before?’ This is fantastic.’ I replied  ‘I know. That's why I live here’."

Captain Jutten made an emotional farewell on Facebook to the locals of the Bay.

The message was posted on the page Ships in Torbay and Lyme Bay with over 15 000 followers.

It said: "Dear people of Torbay. I would like to thank you for all your support during the past months. It was a pleasure to be anchored in your beautiful bay. I wish the ships (all ships) good luck as they are returning to their natural element in the coming months to welcome our guests back. Like ships, we come and go, visit new places, make new friends and meet up with old friends. We will always remember this unusual time and your support. Until we meet again."
