Liam Meyer from South Devon has started a 2000 mile-round motorbike trip from Land’s End to John O’Groats in Scotland, and back again, to raise funds for men’s health charity Movember.
The 37-year old, who works as a videographer for the NHS, was inspired to do the trip after losing his father to Covid in March last year.
Following his dad’s passing, Liam set up a support network group on Facebook, called Alone Together, as a way for those who had lost loved ones during the pandemic, to connect and help one another grieve. He found through the group that men were most in need of mental health support.
During ‘The United Ride’, Liam hopes to connect with those he has met through the support network, which now has over 900 members, largely from the UK, but also as far as South Africa and Australia.
Liam, who shared a passion with his father for ‘anything with an engine’, had long wanted to complete the Land’s End to John O’Groats journey and realised honoring his dad’s memory was a great reason to do so. He also saw the ride as an opportunity to raise awareness and funds for men’s mental health.
“I started noticing after I set up the Alone Together support network that 90% of the people reaching out were women, and the men stayed very quiet”, says Liam.
“I know that Covid-19 has had a big impact on men’s mental health. My dad and I were very close, and he and his dad were too. But after my dad lost his own father, he never spoke about his grief. And again when he beat lung cancer in 2003, it really took a toll on his body but he never opened up about it.
“Dad loved bikes, but couldn’t ride himself because of health issues. I know he would have loved the idea of this ride.”
Liam will be joined by his good friend Justin Breyley on the journey, and has kindly been donated two motorbikes from his friend Robbie Savage, which will be raffled off after the trip, with funds going towards Movember. In total, Liam hopes to raise £2,000.
