A Torquay pensioner who has been isolating alone for more than a year after losing his wife and dog was treated to a birthday surprise by local children. Sydney Thacker, who hasn’t been out of his house for over a year due to Covid-19 guidelines, said: "It was lovely to see the children and they sang me three songs!"
Armed forces veteran Sydney, who lives in Shiphay, turned 88 on February 24 and to help him celebrate children from Peekaboo Childcare paid him a visit along with Sally Farrant, community builder for Shiphay, and a local resident Anita. Harry Morton, director of Peekaboo Childcare, said: "It was a lovely celebration in Sydney’s front garden where all parties could be socially distanced. “The children sang to Sydney and delivered cards and pictures. There was even a song about a tiger as Sydney is very fond of them.
“Peekaboo Childcare is committed to being actively part of the Shiphay community and supporting local residents. We teach our children to care for and respect the community we are part of helping them to understand the benefits of belonging to a community.” Sydney grew up near Widdecombe but has lived in Shiphay since the 1960s. He said he would love to visit Dartmoor again in the summer. “Today brought well needed smiles to everyone’s faces, young and old,” said Harry.
