Schools across Torbay were given 'seed bombs' to help teach children about bee conservation in a project run by Torbay Libraries.

Priory and St Margaret Clitherow Catholic primary schools in Torquay held a ‘Go Green Day’ which included a composting workshop held by Torbay Council.

Pupils made marzipan bees and scattered the ‘bee bomb' seeds in the school garden, followed by a litter pick of the school grounds.

Torbay Libraries have been re-connecting with the community since the easing of lockdown.

Now libraries are fully open, they are welcoming more families back, not just to borrow books, and the libraries are now holding events, starting up clubs and working with other local charities on community projects.

The ‘Bring the Bees Back to the Bay' scheme was one such project.

Torbay Libraries contacted local schools and donated 'seed bombs' as well as a lesson plan to teach pupils all about bee conservation and how to help the planet.

The bee project coincides with the Summer Reading Challenge which is being hosted at all Torbay and Devon Libraries.

This year's theme is 'wild world heroes' and children are being encouraged to help their local community and the local wildlife.

There is still plenty of time to sign up - there will be events in the libraries this year and the staff are hosting in-person activities.

Torbay Libraries continues its work with the local community including working with Paignton Community Larder and new local businesses via their new BIPC Centre at Paignton library, cementing their role as a much-needed lifeline to many people.

Torbay Libraries is managed by Libraries Unlimited, the charity responsible for running libraries in Devon and Torbay. Find out more at
