Families and railway enthusiasts are being invited to step back in time this Easter as the South Devon Railway prepares to host a special two-day gala event.

The Easter Gala, taking place on 4 and 5 April, will see the heritage line come to life with a mix of steam and diesel locomotives running along its scenic route through the Dart Valley.

Running between Buckfastleigh and Totnes, the railway follows the course of the River Dart and is widely regarded as one of the most picturesque heritage lines in the country. The line originally formed part of the former Great Western Railway network before closing in the 20th century and later being preserved and reopened by volunteers in 1969.

Organisers say the gala will offer more than just train rides, with visitors able to explore behind the scenes and learn how the railway operates. Activities will include opportunities to pull signal levers, visit the workshop and see maintenance work up close.

A classic car display is also planned, showcasing vintage vehicles and celebrating the history of transport across different eras.

At Buckfastleigh, visitors can take advantage of free parking, as well as explore the station’s museum and gift shop. The railway also offers the option of travelling to Totnes, where visitors can enjoy the town’s independent shops, cafés and riverside walks.

Ernest Elsworth-Wilson, General Manager of South Devon Railway, said: “Easter is the perfect time to visit the railway. Whether you’re a long-time enthusiast or simply looking for a great family day out, the gala offers something for everyone.

“There’s a real sense of occasion with multiple locomotives in operation, and the opportunity to get hands-on and see how everything works makes it a particularly engaging experience for visitors of all ages.

“Combined with the scenery of the Dart Valley and everything else there is to explore along the line, it’s a fantastic way to spend a spring day,” he added.
