Bideford endured a difficult afternoon on the road as they were beaten 4–0 by fellow strugglers Brixham, leaving the Robins searching for answers after a below-par display in Torbay.

From the outset, Bideford found themselves under pressure against a Brixham side showing greater urgency and intent. Early warning signs came when former Robin Jordan Ewing forced a smart save from Jack Flower, while Aaron Wellington sent a free kick just over as the hosts pushed forward.

Despite the early pressure, Bideford did create a couple of half-chances. Javan Wright was unable to connect with a Brad Williams delivery and later headed wide from an Alex Byrne cross, but clear opportunities remained limited.

The breakthrough came in the 29th minute when a deep corner caused problems at the back post, allowing former Bideford man Ryan Beattie to head home and give the hosts the lead.

The Robins struggled to respond, with their best effort before the break coming from Farren Simons, whose long-range strike cleared the crossbar. Matters worsened just before half time when Wellington produced a fine free kick to double Brixham’s advantage.

Looking to change the momentum, Bideford made a triple substitution at the interval, introducing Ryan Turner, Jamie Hearsey and Harvey Field. The changes brought a brief improvement, and the Robins were handed a golden opportunity to get back into the game in the 54th minute when Turner won a penalty.

However, Hearsey’s spot kick was well saved low to his left by Dan Gillard, a moment that proved pivotal in the contest.

Brixham nearly extended their lead soon after when James De Selincourt’s header struck the crossbar, while at the other end Jack Winsor’s deflected effort rolled narrowly wide in what was Bideford’s best opening of the second half.

The game was effectively put to bed when De Selincourt broke through on goal. Although Flower made the initial save, Cole Harford was quickest to react, heading into an empty net to make it 3–0.

Bideford’s afternoon went from bad to worse in the closing stages as a high ball into the box was not dealt with, allowing Wellington to finish from 12 yards and complete the scoring.

The defeat leaves the Robins with plenty to reflect on as they look to respond in their fight to steer clear of trouble in the weeks ahead.

Elsewhere, there was some sad news from the North Devon Football League:

“It is with great sadness that we must inform you of the immediate withdrawal of AFC Dumnonni 2nd team from the league,” said the NDFL.

The club has issued the following statement: "Unfortunately, despite the hard work from the committee and key players/volunteers, AFC Dumnonii Reserves will have to fold.

“This is due to a combination of player commitment, made worse by the recent bad weather, and the loss of key volunteers behind the scenes.

“Hopefully all players who were regularly playing will either push for the first team or look to continue playing locally in the area.”

As a result of their withdrawal, all playing records for AFC Dumnonii 2nd will be expunged from the division and the team removed from the league table.

This is yet another sign of the times, reflecting the challenges faced not only here in North Devon but across the county and beyond. It is a real shame that the 2nd team could not continue, especially given the excellent work carried out by the club’s committee and volunteers over recent seasons.
