Snow and ice prompts safety advice for drivers and visitors on Dartmoor (Image- Jamie Townsend)
Drivers and visitors are being advised to take extra care on Dartmoor as snow and ice are forecast across the area and the wider South West, with difficult driving conditions possible.
A number of local organisations have taken to social media to share their advice with locals regarding the potentially disruptive weather conditions we have experienced in recent days.

Dartmoor National Park Authority advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and to take extra care. In a statement on Facebook, the authority said:
“Snow and ice [are] forecast across the South West. Keep yourself and others safe and only travel to Dartmoor if necessary.”
Because of the weather, Postbridge Visitor Centre is closed for the day, with the authority saying the decision was made “to keep staff safe who live rurally.”
Dartmoor National Park Authority added that winter conditions can cause “hazardous road conditions, especially icy patches,” and urged people to follow Met Office advice.
Local businesses have also shared road condition updates. Fox Tor Café & Dartmoor Bunkhouse reported that roads in Princetown had been treated.
The post said: “Roads in Princetown have been gritted and delivery vehicles and traffic are moving about ok.”
However, some routes remain risky. The same update warned that “Pork Hill coming up from Tavistock was very slippery last night,” while Peak Hill from Plymouth, Yelverton and Dousland “looks good for driving.”
Drivers were reminded: “As always be safe when you're driving, please don't take any risks.”
Weather group UK Weather Chase have also urged people to prepare before heading out.
Referring to past disruption, the group said: "Let's not forget what happened last year. It was horrendous on Dartmoor, cars abandoned on roadsides, traffic at a standstill, and multiple families, including kids stuck for hours in freezing conditions.”
They advised drivers to check forecasts and road conditions, carry warm clothing and supplies, and make sure vehicles are ready for winter travel.
The post added: “A little planning now can save a lot of stress later.”
People planning to travel across Dartmoor are being urged to stay alert, plan carefully, and only make journeys if necessary while wintry conditions continue.
