Isca Academy students received an insight into local politics and civic responsibility after a visit from Exeter councillor Andrew Leadbetter this term.

Cllr Leadbetter toured the school, part of the Ted Wragg Trust, before sitting down with members of the student leadership team for a discussion about community priorities, public service and how young people can influence decisions in their city.

Students asked about his work in local government and shared their own views on issues affecting Exeter.

According to staff, the group showed a strong interest in how political decisions are made and how residents (including young people) can get involved.

Cllr Leadbetter said he was impressed by the students’ confidence and curiosity, offering advice on ways they could contribute to their communities and stay engaged with local matters.

Headteacher Vicki Joyce said the visit gave students a valuable opportunity to learn about leadership beyond the classroom: “It was a real privilege to welcome Councillor Leadbetter to Isca Academy,” she said.

“Our students were inspired by his visit, and it provided a fantastic opportunity for them to explore how they can make a difference in their community.”

Ted Wragg Trust CEO Moira Marder added that promoting civic interest is central to the trust’s mission: “We are thrilled that our students had the chance to meet Councillor Leadbetter and engage in such meaningful discussion,” she said.

“Encouraging young people to take an active interest in local decision making is central to our mission, and this visit perfectly illustrates the opportunities our schools provide to nurture confident, socially aware citizens.”
