Newton Abbot gears up for Christmas lights event full of family activities

Newton Abbot is preparing for a busy programme of entertainment as the town’s Christmas lights are switched on later this month.

The event, organised by Newton Abbot Town Council, will take place on Saturday, November 22, with festivities beginning at 12pm. 

Courtenay Street is expected to become a hub of activity, with stalls offering handmade gifts and an array of street-food options including jerk chicken, wraps, churros and pizza.

Free family activities will again feature as part of the celebrations, with a face painter and balloon modeller returning.

Creative Newton Abbot will also be providing art activities for the local community free of charge. 

Visitors can also look out for giant stilt-walkers and performances by the Taiko Drummers.

Santa’s Grotto will be open inside St Leonard’s Clock Tower, offering what organisers describe as an opportunity for “fireside selfies”.

Father Christmas is set to arrive in a small procession featuring a fire engine crewed by firefighters from Newton Abbot, a vintage car and the Ipplepen Carnival Float.

The lights will be switched on at 5.30pm, led by Father Christmas with support from the Town Crier, Mrs Christmas, Mayor Cllr Colin Parker, and his wife Jean.

Events Co-ordinator Natalie Hicks said: “It’s a day we really love to organise and we know is popular with families. Once again, we’ve made all of the entertainment and activities free of charge so that hopefully people can just soak up the atmosphere without worrying about the cost.”

She added that a strong turnout helps boost local businesses: “Attracting a big audience also means that our shops and businesses can make the most of the day, so look out for any special seasonal offers they might have.”

Hicks encouraged visitors to explore the wider town centre, including Queen Street, Union Street, Bank Street and East Street, adding: “Christmas 2025 is getting under way and we look forward to seeing you for a great day together on Saturday November 22, tell your friends!”

The next festive event after the switch-on will be the Victorian Evening on Wednesday, December 3, featuring charity stalls.
