Karing sends out appeal for drivers

Torbay Weekly

Torbay charity Karing is appealing for drivers.

They are keen to hear from anyone that can spare a few to a lot of hours during the week driving patients to medical appointments. The charity, which has been running for over 40 years, is desperate to increase its volunteer capacity.

Manager Mark Faulkner said:  “We carry out nearly 4000 journeys per year to all medical appointments that clients cannot ordinarily get to. The service runs seven days per week and we do our very best to try and accommodate everyone.

"All a prospective driver needs is their own car, a DBS charge that we can apply for if a volunteer does not already have one, a caring nature and some free time.!"

Drivers are reimbursed for their mileage at 45p per mile. This begins when they leave their home and finishes when they return home. Drivers  can do as much or as little as they would like and go on short or longer journeys.

Mark added: “Torbay would be lost without this service but we need more drivers urgently as we are getting referrals from every part of the medical fraternity – doctors, dentists, chiropodists, podiatrists, social services and of course hospitals.

“Anyone who would like to join please get in touch with our office on 01803 524799 or via email office@karing.org.uk or alternatively pop in – we are opposite the Conservative Club in Preston."
