Despite the physical difficulties arising from Multiple Sclerosis, local patient Valerie Bailey started running on average two miles, a day six days a week to raise funds for the neurology department at Torbay Hospital.
Her target was 50 miles for the month. But just a week into the challenge disaster struck as Valerie ended in Torbay Hospital for a week with a serious autoimmune condition.
She feared she would not be able to complete her challenge .Enter her daughter and local GP Juliet Bailey and friends and supporters who stepped up to offer miles for her challenge.
Kath Wilson, from Teignmouth, local runner Anneliese Slader, Valeries cousin from France, Eric Breton, and finally Susie Payne all put their best feet forward and ended up running more than 64 miles.
The aim was to raise funds to develop new tools for 'people with MS' to use.
Dr Agne Straukiene, Consultant Neurologist at Torbay, said: "MS ehealth developers(Civica company) are planning to issue a new, automated feedback system for people with MS who perform a questionnaire linked with our new MS database at Torbay.
"We have been working on this MS Infoflex management tool for the last couple of years. Our plan is (depending on finances) to advance this tool within our IT system with new feedback and notification system for People With MS. Further funding is required to advance this important work. With these health innovations we are hoping to improve the health care experience.
"The system we are creating is very unique and based on machine learning. We are planning to publish the results after we have done some testing.’’
Valerie said: "I would just like to say a big thank you to all those who have donated money and miles for this challenge. Despite the odds, we have managed to keep this fundraiser going! We haven’t yet made enough for the impact intended. Please continue to give generously to this excellent cause."
