Jubilee awards for our Norrms

Jubilee champion award for Torbay's Norman McNamara

Torbay Weekly

Torbay Weekly columnist and campaigner for dementia awareness, Norman McNamara, has been awarded a Queens Jubilee Champions Award for Voluntary Service.

Not only is he one of the 490 Champions, Norrms was also selected as one of the seventy champions invited to the Palace on June 4 and the Eden Project Big Jubilee Lunch on June 5.

Unfortunately, Norman was not well enough to travel to London and, therefore, could not collect his award in person from a member of the Royal Family, so it will be forwarded to him.

His incredible list of achievements includes founding The Purple Angel Memory Café at Barton Baptist Church. Norrms created the Dementia Aware Facebook group, which now has over 23,000 followers and provides a regular column in the Torbay Weekly, highlighting the challenges faced by people living with dementia, and their families and carers.

Norrms has written books on the subject ‘Lewy Body Soldier’ and ‘Me and My Alzheimers’, and set up the Torbay Dementia Action Alliance. He started the Purple Angel Ambassadors www.purpleangel-global.com with fantastic information and guidance on the illness.

Some of his work can be seen around Torbay, such as the creation of ‘Planted Memories’, a garden scheme of planning and planting in the Dementia-friendly Tessier Gardens in Torquay.

Norrms has raised funds for Dementia UK, Alzheimers Research UK, The Lewy Body Society, Young Dementia UK, Alzheimer’s Society, as well as pioneering the fundraising and distribution of free Mp3 players with favourite music to assist people living with Dementia to live better lives. Recipients include Hospital Wards, Care Homes, GPs surgeries.

He organised he first fundraising Torbay World Rocks Day with his wife Elaine and wrote a song ‘Within My Mind’ performed by the Plymouth Military Wives Choir. From this came World Rocks Against Dementia, where funds from music events are donated to Dementia projects,

There is so much more in his list of accomplishments, including the creation of the first Dementia Friendly Airline with Virgin Atlantic.

Norrms selflessly lays bare how the disease has impacted his life and the lives of those around him, using his own experiences to benefit others. Congratulations to our Norrms.
