Double celebrations are in order, as not only are we celebrating 45 years of Torbay Hospital Radio this month, but we are also very excited to announce that we are now broadcasting on FM.
That’s right, not only can you listen to us via the website and Alexa, but those of you working or staying in Torbay Hospital and the nearby vicinity can now tune in via 95.9 FM.
This is a great milestone, as the last few years with the pandemic and the retirement of the bedside systems, made it a lot harder for us to reach our core listeners – the patients and staff of Torbay Hospital, particularly those who are elderly or don’t have access to smart devices. Our next goal is to get mini radios to share with wards, so everyone has the chance to tune in.
Last weekend, in the wake of Storm Eunice, volunteers from the station went to Co-op stores in Kingskerswell and Shiphay to help celebrate the launch and our connection with the local Co-op where we are one of their chosen charities. As far as we can tell, our transmitter was not knocked off course by the strong winds and we hope this will help us reach a wider audience.
Regular updates were given from the studio, where shows were presented live all day, starting with Jordan and the breakfast show, with roving reporters ringing in updates. There was also an opportunity for shoppers to make requests which were played shortly after, live on air, something that we hope shows the value of hospital radio. If you have a loved one who needs cheering up, what could be better than a message and tune they love, we can normally do it the same day.
There are currently over 170 hospital radio stations, managed and staffed by volunteers from all walks of life from students to the retired. The volunteers within the hospital radio work tirelessly to provide this on an increasingly 24-hour basis. You can listen 24/7 to us hear at Torbay. Here’s to the next 45 years.
