In the week that bike racing in the South West was ruled out for the 2020 season, Torquay prospect Harrison Wood pulled off an impressive solo ‘Erace’ victory for his Dutch team.

Wood (SEG Racing Academy) has been in fine ‘form’ this year and he started his 20th birthday celebrations early when he dominated his team’s international GP Pienza, over a ‘virtual’ hill-packed Italian course.

He won by 38 seconds from a group of five chasers, with the rest of the field more than two minutes back.

Road racing in the UK is highly unlikely in 2020 because of Covid-19 fears but there had been hopes that time-trialling might be possible.

But Paignton’s Ken Robertson, regional secretary of ruling body Cycle Time Trials (CTT), reported: “Although most of the riders want to race, at the moment we simply don’t have enough officials who are prepared to put themselves at risk or HQs with sufficient facilities.”
