Torquay United have agreed deals to sign two experienced centre-backs, Gary Warren from Exeter City and former Scottish under-21 international Fraser Kerr from Hartlepool United, as manager Gary Johnson continues his squad strengthening ahead of a return to pre-season training at the weekend.
Johnson announced at the end of last week that strikers Danny Wright and Andrew Nelson were on their way to Plainmoor.
Like Wright, former Gulls loanee Warren had been tipped to join the club but Johnson has also now revealed that Kerr will sign, with the experience of a combined appearance tally of more than 600 games between them.
United are expected to unveil a fifth permanent signing, an attacking midfield player, within the next 48 hours.
Warren, 35, played just three games for Torquay last season but he impressed everyone then.
The Bristolian had previously played for Team Bath, Newport County, Inverness Caledonian Thistle for six years, Yeovil Town and Exeter City.
Warren’s career has featured 384 games and 33 goals.
Lanarkshire-born Kerr comes to United after spells with Birmingham City, Motherwell for three years, Cowdenbeath, Stenhousemuir, Gateshead and Hartlepool, where he played 28 times last season, including Pool’s 2-1 win at Plainmoor 11 months ago.
Of Warren, Johnson said: “In the few games he played here, you could see a real level-headed player, and it’s great to have that experience around.
“He will have a future in the game beyond his time as a player.”
Of Kerr, Johnson said: “He played many games in the Scottish Premiership, as did Gary Warren. He is a good athlete, with good pace and he can play for a centre-half.
“I am very excited that we have got two very experienced players who should help to cut out some of the goals we were letting in last season.”
Although there is still no confirmation of the National League 2020-2021 start-date, pre-season training starts for United’s senior players this Saturday, and for United’s youth and age-group teams on August 10.
