A training accident has stopped Torbay cyclist Harrison Wood from rejoining his Dutch team for a return to road competition.

Wood (SEG Racing Academy), 20, has produced impressive results in ‘virtual’ races during the Covid-19 crisis but at the weekend he was involved in a collision with a car in Newton Abbot.

“I suffered some cuts and bruises, especially my right thigh,’ he said. “It could have been a lot worse but I’ll have to stay here for a week or two to recover.”

Meanwhile, Paignton’s Torbay Velopark is still off-limits, and it has lost a major event of the winter off-road season.

The track remains closed as it is part of the still-shut Torbay Leisure Centre.

The Velopark also stages a popular round of the SW Cyclo-Cross League but following the abandonment of road racing in 2020, that league has also been called off, prompting widespread dismay on social media.
