Gym fund-raising kids are just a knockout

Torbay Weekly

Children from Elite Community Gym in Torquay took part in a sponsored fancy dress fun run to raise money for new equipment for the children’s boxing classes.

They were armed with buckets to collect donations as they ran from Torquay Seafront to Preston Green.

Medals and prizes were handed out at a presentation party held back at the gym on the Woodland industrial estate afterwards

A buffet was also provided by Jo and her team of helpers from Seven Dials Cafe Cockington Court. The little ones were delighted with an appearance from Spiderman and Batman from Devon Super Team arriving in the Batmobile. All runners received a finishers certificate and gumshield, with the first four places in both age groups being awarded medals.

It was organised by the clubs boxing coaches, Natasha Montgomery, Lee Mulcahy, of Mulcahy Boxing, and Kievan Sincock who all give up their free time every week to support the youth of Torbay, helping them to keep fit and providing them with a haven to discuss any troubles they may be facing.

The Community gym, a non-profit organisation owned by Gareth Hogg, is at the heart of the local community.

It has helped throughout the lockdowns by setting up food banks and distributing care packages to those who have needed support.

The club is offering boxing classes to a wide range of ages up to 16. The club has been in desperate need of things like new head guards and punchbags.

Natasha, a real advocate for young mental health, is extremely proud of the youngsters and is overwhelmed with the support they have received from the community.

She said: "We have had some fantastically community-minded companies jump in and support us in organising this event. Cesral Cleaning and Decorating, Unwonted Apparel, Devon Fire Awareness Training,  Daniel Hubble - Personal Training, Print on me, The Last Nail Tattoo and   The little supplement company all pitched in to help us.

“The Co-Op in Shiphay also allowed us to perform a demonstration outside and collect funds from local shoppers.

“We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone involved we have estimated a fundraising total of £1,500 so far.”

Boxing classes are run weekly on a Tuesday and Thursday from 6 pm until 7 pm, for further details please message the Facebook page
