Gulls' to have say on title fight at Stockport

Torbay Weekly

Torquay United's penultimate game of the season, away to Stockport County on Wednesday night, has taken on added importance after the Hatters' 3-0 defeat at National League title rivals Wrexham (writes Dave Thomas).

In the Sunday meeting of the division's two biggest spenders, Wrexham delighted a 10,000-plus crowd at the Racecourse Ground to draw level on points with County but top of the table on a goal difference of +2.

Gulls supporters will know only too well that there is only one automatic promotion place on offer, and Stockport have one game in hand on the Red Dragons - against Torquay at Edgeley Park in midweek.

United, who finished second last year and then lost the Play-Off Final to Hartlepool on penalties, may have little to play for on paper, as they are in tenth place and can't make this season's POs.

But their form after Saturday's 2-0 home win over Chesterfield - W13 D7 L4 - is among the best in the division.

The big question is - can Gary Johnson's Gulls pull out another big performance and upset Stockport, who they've already beaten (2-1) at Plainmoor?

After Wednesday, everyone will have one game left on Sunday afternoon.

Torquay travel to mid-table rivals Southend United, but Stockport are at home to FC Halifax Town (4th) and Wrexham are away to Dagenham & Redbridge (8th), who still have an outside chance of making the Play-Offs.
