Green Spaces with Hannah Worthington: Jubilee gardens painting competition

Hannah Worthington

The floral display looks like an impressionist painting – the mass of red, white and blue flowers framed by the stone planters at the foot of Oldway Mansion’s rather regal façade.

It may not be judging time for garden competition season just yet, but Oldway Garden Volunteers will certainly have this is mind as they carefully weed, edge, plant and prune around the grounds.

This year many green space groups across the Bay have entered the main South West in Bloom competition, others have applied to for the community focussed ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ award, and a few have submitted entries for both.

The two awards, run by Britain in Bloom and the Royal Horticultural Society, are aimed at recognising the efforts of all those involved in caring for parks, gardens, and other green spaces across the country.

There is a further garden-related contest taking place, but you don’t need green fingers to enter this one!

Each year South West in Bloom organise a painting competition for children and young people under 16, and the theme for this year’s competition is ‘The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Garden’.

From a red, white and blue flower display in the grounds of Oldway, to a fountain fit for royalty in Princess Gardens, or maybe even a royal pollinator (think ‘Queen Bee’!); young artists should put their imaginations to work and come up with a subject they think fits the theme.

Open to age groups up to six years, seven to 11 years and 12-16 years, the paintings should be a maximum of A3 in size (297 x 420 mm).

Write the artist’s name and age, plus the name of their school, clearly on the back of the painting.

Entries should be marked ‘Art Comp’ and posted/delivered to SWISCo, Aspen Way, Yalberton Industrial Estate, Paignton TQ4 7QR.

The closing date is Friday, July 8, and Torbay winners will be entered in the main South West competition. Unfortunately, it is not possible to return submitted works.

To get involved in helping to care for Torbay’s green spaces, or for information about the competition, please contact Hannah Worthington by email hannah.worthington@swisco.co.uk or call 07747 616 075
