The River Teign all set to host a National Championship in the water

National Flounder Championships takes headlines in a winter on the water

The next few weeks are exciting times for anglers who like Flounder fishing, competition fishing or even both. The National Flounder Championships held on the River Teign are over the weekend November 22 and 23.

This is the 28th running of this very popular event. The sign-on is at the Teignmouth SAS headquarters on the back beach at Teignmouth on November 21 and 22 from 6.30pm - 8pm.

Fishing on both days is from 8am – 4pm with a top prize of £3,100 for the best Flounder. The prize table is in the region of £5,000 and there is even a prize for the best Bass. Further details can be obtained from Dan on 07701 316290.

The next two big comps are to be fished in the Kingsbridge Estuary, the first being the month-long South-West Flounder Championship, which is fished throughout the whole of December. The boundaries are Portishead on the north Coast and Weymouth on the South. Entry for this is just £20 for adults with an optional £5 pool, fishing again for a guaranteed top prize of £1,000.

Any fish over 2lbs 6oz must be videoed at the time of capture and taken alive to one of the many weigh stations around the area. The full details are on their Facebook page or from Kingsbridge and District SAC.

The final competition is the Kingsbridge Estuary Flounder competition on December 13 and 14. Entry is again £20 plus pool with another amazing prize of £1,000 on offer. Video proof is also required in the competition more details from Adam on 07528 677904 and Rob on 07938 100953.

Around the coast this week, Newton Abbot’s Chris Wagstaff fished a mark new to him and found Small Eyed Rays up to 7lb using one of the modern dongle rigs baited with Launce and Squid.

Father and son duo Chris and Archie Sweetland travelled to the North Coast, where Archie landed a Small Eyed Ray of 9lbs 5oz and Chris had the best Conger eel of 13lbs.

Spring Ponds held one of their open matches with the victor on this occasion being Jason Fay with 56lbs of Carp and Roach. He was fishing a pole to the far bank and was fishing shallow with 6mm pellets. Second was Damien Brading with 27lbs 15oz and third was Joe Jaques with 20lbs 12oz.

Newton Abbot FA’s lates Wednesday Rover Sweepstake was fished at Wapperwell Pond and won by Gary Webber with 10lbs 8oz with Mike Mudge and Steve Aldridge taking the next two spots with 9lbs 14oz and 9lbs 7oz respectively.
